One tricky thing about dressing up in the summer is mastering the art of layering. If you’re in a place where it tends to get chilly in the evening (or if your office is a bit aggressive with air conditioning), you’ll need a little something that will keep you just warm enough but still succeed. to work with the rest of your summer wardrobe. Enter: the oversized denim jacket.
“Styling something oversized is inherently an exercise in playing with proportions,” said Corey Robinson, senior vice president, head of design and merchandising at Abercrombie & Fitch. BAZAAR.com. He adds that an oversized style can be great for balancing fitted pieces like mini dresses or bike shorts, staples in the hot-weather rotation.
While you might be more familiar with the ’90s-inspired structured silhouette, this season you’ll find a wide variety of design options in the denim outerwear space, which means you can adapt your ideal jacket to suit your summer aesthetic, whether that inclines more cottagecore or you prefer more sporty pieces. “There are different versions of this style, from big and boxy to vintage trucker style or more of a boyfriend look,” says Alissa Friedman, senior PR and marketing manager at Mavi. “So think about your personal style and what would best complement your everyday look. If you’re planning on going denim over denim, styling your jacket with denim or jeans, try contrasting washes at the top and down so the final look isn’t too matchy-matchy.”
Also, adds Robinson, be sure to keep denim weight in mind. “For a softer look, look for a jacket that has drape – these are most often jackets made from lighter materials that have a bit of flow and movement,” he says. “For something that looks a bit more authentic and has some structure, like you pulled it off the rack at a vintage store, look for something made from a heavier, more stiffer.”
