RSD Ronin CE Jacket Review [Roland Sands Design Leather]

I’ve reviewed all kinds of gear over the years, from helmets to boots and everything in between. I’m tempted to say my favorite items are helmets but, truth be told, I like a really nice jacket. The Ronin CE is just that. I’ve owned dozens of leather motorcycle jackets, and they’re all lovely. However, none have the look and feel of leather Roland Sands Design (RSD) uses on its Ronin CE jacket.RSD Ronin CE Jacket Review: Price - Roland Sands DesignThe leather, an RSD exclusive product named Airborne, is a hand-finished, washed, oiled and waxed full-grain cowhide leather (0.9m to 1.1mm thick) that is so soft to the touch and has a shiny, waxy finish. . It looks a bit like fine lambskin, but thicker and sturdier. Jackets can be plain or fancy. However, the design, components and craftsmanship have to be. As they say of beautiful watches, I find that the best ones have complications, which is to say any function on a watch other than displaying the time. When it comes to fine leather goods and textiles, I define complications as elements of design and functionality that might not be necessary on a plain garment, but add so much depth to the final product. The Ronin CE from Roland Sands Designs is such a jacket, and oh, the beautiful complications. I’ve spent days wearing one, it’s quite comfortable, and with the soft leather it feels like a second skin. The tasteful leather motorcycle jacket is not immediately perceived as ornate, so details that might be overlooked deserve attention.RSD Ronin CE Jacket Review: For Sale - Roland Sands DesignAt first glance, cowhide leather feels soft and supple right out of the rack. The sleeves are stitched together with multiple sections that accentuate the slightly pre-curved arms, and don’t look like the designer was just trying to use a bunch of scraps. There are uniquely cut perforated underarm sections, extending from the armpits to below the elbows. The anti-cold flap is also perforated, as are the zipped gussets on the sleeves and the zipped gussets on the hips for ventilation. All interior leather is perforated, though backed by strong, airtight exterior leather; he looks fabulous. While I’m talking about the interior, it’s made up of a fancy gold-colored satin polyester lining with a zippered pocket for a little back protection. There’s a Napoleon pocket on the left side, two stretch mesh cargo pockets (claimed to hold six packs) on either side, and a flap phone pocket on the right. My iPhone 11 just fits in width and protrudes about an inch, so maybe it’s a small wallet pocket.RSD Ronin CE Jacket Review: MSRP - Roland Sands DesignOn the outside of the Roland Sands Design Ronin CE motorcycle jacket, there is a Mandarin collar with two snaps for adjustment, a left chest zippered pocket, a zippered pocket on the right sleeve and zippered handwarmer pockets. The left pocket has an inside clip for keys. Riveted leather pull tabs bearing the RSD logo are found on the main zipper, sleeve pocket, handwarmer pockets and sleeve vents. All zippers on the jacket are metal and YKK branded. There is a leather tab with a metal eyelet along the back seam between the shoulders. Five leather sections are stitched in a nice pattern on the back to add a desirable design element. It’s a nice jacket. RSD made the jacket in India, which I haven’t seen from any major manufacturer. That said, I would compare the Ronin CE to pretty much the best garments made anywhere.RSD Ronin CE Jacket Review: Price - Roland Sands Design Leather Motorcycle ClothingRSD describes the fit as “aggressive sport styling” that’s “true to size.” I’m usually a US 46, which translates to a Large in this jacket – precise fit. There are three versions of the Ronin, each with slight differences. The Ronin CE includes flexible SAS-TEC elbow and shoulder armor and is CE Level 1 certified. This armor is very thin and barely noticeable, but provides CE level protection. The jacket is CE certified to class AA, one level below the maximum rating. However, there is no back protector, which is unfortunate at this price. RSD paid great attention to the design and construction of the Roland Sands Design Ronin CE Jacket, and the results speak for themselves.RSD Ronin CE Jacket Highlights
