Casio G-Shock becomes an all-metal jacket

Casio, makers of the world’s toughest watch – Casio G-Shock – have, of late, exploited the aesthetics of the rectangular G-Shock OG to great effect. Partly because of general trends in watch design leaning towards cleaner lines and partly because of the mystical hold nostalgia has on all of us. So with the clunky, layered interface of the modern, armageddon-proof G-Shock and with the symmetrical, rectangular G-Shock. As always, the nomenclature would be best used to describe a stealth bomber, but given that the G-Shock is essentially the SR-71 Blackbird of the watch world, a name like GMW-B500MB isn’t quite on its own. square.

The defining visual attribute of the new Casio G-Shock is, of course, its metallic bezel which has been polished and chamfered with genuine Japanese attention to detail to create a slightly worn look. The brushed surface of the stainless steel bezel and bracelet is treated for black ion plating, giving the watch a grunge and industrial vibe. The silver hue of the bezel contrasts perfectly with the blackened edges of the case and bracelet. After the initial black ion plating, the top surface of the bezel is polished again with what Casio calls a “hairline finish” to expose most of the stainless steel underneath.

In terms of functionality, this is definitely a contemporary G-Shock. It gets Bluetooth connectivity, a world time feature that provides access to five different time zones selected from 39 presets. It is receptive to radio waves, waterproof up to 200 meters and, it goes without saying, shockproof like never before. The Bluetooth function allows you to link your smartphone to the watch, allowing it to automatically change the local time if you change time zones. Unlike modern forms of portable technology, you don’t have to worry about recharging it thanks to its solar-powered battery feature. If your adventures find you in a dungeon, don’t worry. This baby should last you a few days thanks to its power saving feature that activates automatically.
